In June of 2022, several families with children that I had instructed over the last few years decided that the public school system was no longer a good fit for them. They had concerns about their children's education, and did not think that it was best left in someone else's hands.
Those parents decided to home school their children. There were a few problems though - they had no idea where to start, how to plan and implement lessons, or how to overcome the digital divide .
A few parents approached me about how to implement home instruction and I offered to assist them. Some of these students had at least 4 different teachers during kindergarten and first grade. Then, in March of 2020, they had to figure out how to successfully navigate distance learning. The parents were concerned about the loss of learning their children experienced.
In August of 2022, I was inspired to create Mountain Educational Adventures because I wanted to support families who chose to home school their children. I purchased textbooks, workbooks, and supplies - all of the things necessary in a traditional elementary classroom. I asked my mentor if she would help me, and she graciously agreed.
In August, we rented a space in the community where we could meet as a group. There were bathrooms, a kitchen, and a large space with tables. We paid rent and utilities to meet there three times a week. Friends and family donated books, iPads, school supplies, food, toilet paper, paper towels, printer ink, and paper. We became a community - a village.
Our little group turned into a happy family.
Those students that had been struggling - were thriving! The kindergartners with no school experience - were learning! It was great. Halfway through the year the parents approached me about next year and beyond.
Now we are planning to build a site that will be for Mountain Educational Adventures to hold classes. We have a little piece of land, and the donating begins again. We have received: doors, windows, boards, chairs, a sink, a propane tank, milled lumber, and more. There are also countless volunteers ready to make it all happen.
We do fundraisers to offset the costs of items that will need to be purchased: lumber, metal roof, insulation, and plywood.
We can be found at local festivals selling items, or holding car washes at the nearby mercantile.
The educators work together in planning and implementing lessons in reading, writing, math, science, social studies, history, handwriting, and spelling. Family members volunteer to teach music, art, give spelling tests, cook meals, clean, or teach about holidays.
The parents need to feel secure that their children have a solid educational foundation when they transition into high school.
Our goal is to do our best to ensure that the students that come to us will receive the best education that we can provide. We want to instill in each child that the sky is the limit as they go through the adventure of life.
